Compassion is as Compassion Does: Anti-Lessons from Tony Hayward

Sometimes time works against us.

Did the inevitable response to the public outcry of the Gulf disaster have to wait that long? Tony Hayward’s ousting was a matter of time. However, waiting that long did not serve BP in the end.

In my June post Small People’s Emotional Psychiatry I agonized with my own emotions being involved in the past with BP.  Somehow, the expected announcement of Hayward’s reaction has left me cold.

Rosabeth Moss Kanter’s article says it all here: Leadership Tips from Tony Hayward (or Not):  “Compassion is as Compassion Does…” You can’t fake it, quench it or limit it. You either feel it or you don’t. And if you don’t have it within you, don’t expect sympathy, understanding, forgiveness.

While time sometimes works against us, it does tend to balance things in the end.
